This is some of what I’ve been reading lately: Realmgolds – Mike Reeves-McMillan – I think I got a copy of this during a free promotion months and months ago, but I forgot and bought it on Amazon a few weeks ago. Oh well. Mike has reviewed several of my books (all in the Erdemen Honor series), coining the term cheerybright to describe what I (and he and a few other people) write. I’ll write a separate article on cheerybright soon – it’s basically the opposite of grimdark. He didn’t know I was reading his book. This is Mike’s first book, […]

This is some of what I’ve been reading lately: The Legend of Eli Monpress series – Rachel Aaron – I just finished Spirit’s End. If you’re looking for a break from grimdark, you should really check out this series. There’s plenty of death, destruction, and high stakes, but it’s told from a lighter perspective, with characters worth loving and rooting for. There is real loyalty and self-sacrifice, along with some really fantastic and inventive magic. As a random aside, I have no idea why the covers are so different. They’re obviously part of different editions, but I don’t know why. The second […]
The cover artist for The Dragon’s Tongue (and the rest of the A Long-Forgotten Song series) sent me a sketch! I did the typography, and that’s not actually the final layout because obviously it will be book cover shaped. But seriously, how awesome is this? Also, you can preorder an ebook of The Dragon’s Tongue now!
Did you love The King’s Sword or Things Unseen? Write a review on Amazon, tell me about it using this form, and I’ll send you my short story Heroes for free!
I got up the courage to join the Insecure Writer’s Support Group. Yeah, how silly is that? I’ve been thinking about it for a while because it seems like a great group of people. But another commitment? Seriously? I didn’t want to flake out, so I just didn’t join for oh… months. An embarrassingly large number of months. But here I am, and here’s my first post. I had a major bout of doubt and frustration a few weeks ago. I spent real money, as in triple digits, on a number of advertising and publicity efforts. Nothing really panned out. […]
I try to keep up with my reading on Goodreads, but I thought I’d put a few mini-reviews on here as well. This is some of what I’ve been reading lately: The Blue Sword – Robin McKinley – I read it a long time ago and remembered really enjoying it, but not much else about it. A sword? A girl kidnapped by magic desert-people? I reread it and yes, I enjoyed it just as much the second time. It’s not my favorite book ever, but it’s one of the earliest fantasy books I remember reading, so it was fun to rediscover […]
Last Saturday I attended the first annual Book Lover’s Bazaar! It was a very small event, but lots of fun. The authors attending (or at least their books were attending) were: Tamela J Ritter Stuart Jaffe – fantasy (urban, paranormal, not so much epic) C.J. Brightley Angela Stevens Megan Whitson Lee Karoline Fritz Heather Gray – Christian romance Elizabeth Maddrey – Christian romance and women’s fiction Claudia Lefeve Kristin Anderson Nick Kelly – cowriting a fantasy series with his wife Stacia Dr. Stacia Kelly Michael J. Sullivan Robin Sullivan – (Michael’s wife) She was on the self-publishing panel with Stuart, Kristin Anderson, and me. She […]
Have you been interested in reading The King’s Sword but haven’t gotten around to it yet? Here’s your chance to get it for free! CLICK HERE I just uploaded The King’s Sword to NoiseTrade, a free distribution platform. All you have to do is sign up with your email address and download it as either a .mobi (Kindle) or .epub (almost everything else). You’re welcome to give me a tip ($5 is suggested, the same as the retail price for the ebook), but it’s not required. The greatest challenge to being an indie author is being discovered. I’ve gotten some good […]
The Singer Trilogy by Calvin Miller was the first poetry I ever loved. I’d read poetry before and been temporarily entertained by a brilliant line or a beautiful moment. But I’d never read poetry eagerly, excited to read the next line even though I knew the story. Love is substance. Lust, illusion. Only in the surge of passion Do they mingle in confusion. This is the only poetry I’ve ever read that made me want to write poetry, serious poetry, not just a few quick lines. I’ve read some of his other books too, like A Requiem for Love. They’re all good, […]
This blog post series is about books that stuck with me for various reasons. Some of them are special to me because of the age at which I first read them, and they introduced me to a new thought or emotional experience. Some of them are special because they introduced me to a new favorite author. A few stuck with me because I hated them so much. But not this one! The Heaven Tree Trilogy by Edith Pargeter is one of my favorite books/series ever. This is a book to read again and again. Love, passion, envy, hate, tragedy, honor, forgiveness, compassion… it’s all […]
